Lawrence Ingrassia & Joanne Lipman - A Fatal Inheritance
In "A Fatal Inheritance: How a Family Misfortune Revealed a Deadly Medical Mystery," Lawrence Ingrassia weaves his moving family story with a sweeping history of cancer research, delivering an intimate, gripping tale that sits at the intersection of memoir and medical thriller. Ingrassia lost his mother, two sisters, brother, and nephew to cancer-different cancers developing at different points throughout their lives. And while highly unusual, his family is not the only one to wonder whether their heartbreak is the result of unbelievable bad luck, or if there might be another explanation.
Through meticulous research and riveting storytelling, Ingrassia takes us from the 1960s-when Frederic...

Radical Respect: How to Work Together Better - Kim Scott and Heidi Stevens

How we can recognize, attack, and eliminate workplace injustice―and transform our careers and organizations in the process? We―all of us―consistently exclude, underestimate, and underutilize huge numbers of people in the workforce even as we include, overestimate, and promote others, often beyond their level of competence. Not only is this immoral and unjust, but it’s also bad for business. Rad...

These kids also live in a world where the news reports on global warming, and the end of humanity... we are being told we have ten or twenty years... imagine what that does to their minds! I grew up with the stress of the Cold War and threat of nuclear war with the USSR... that was bad... but this is next level.

Painful truth to hear, but so brilliantly said. Floored by the the extremely talented, creative and genius Grant Yackel (floored, but not surprised). Yes, you are a survivor. One thing I will try that is mentioned here and in other academic resources on effective education is getting more adults in the classrooms, training them, and retaining a certain percentage as a steady volunteer force. For the most part, nothing remotely similar to this is happening in schools I know of in my area. It's just my speculation but getting more parents and adults involved seems like it would lead to additional support for students and all involved parties, an increased sense of community, and more consistency between priorities, needs, and messaging within the classroom, home, and community.

❤️ this young girls! I think the less resourced communities and schools should be given more resources for a period of time, possibly for generations, so they can have the opportunity to catch up, feel save and thrive. I don’t know how funding works, but as a mom from a community who has enough, I would be happy to see more state or federal money go to communities who need it, even if we got less. We have enough, and chances are, if we don’t, we have family or friends, or churches nearby who can help. Really loved hearing these girls and wish them the best.

I wonder why there are no VISUALS on screen during this talk. It seems to me that part of the problem with screen addiction is a lack of FOCUS. Our devices flood us with INFO-MANIA. This is highly stimulating, but also depressing, because there is no goal, no clear focus, just endlessly stimulation.

The 30,000,000 words claim comes from a 50 year old study that was dubious at best. Claiming the gap is 30,000,000 words before the age of four means 75 million words per year ... that's 24 words PER SECOND that is the GAP ALONE. She's basically saying that well developed kids are hearing more than 24 words per second for 14 hours per day non-stop ... for four years. This is impossible. The idea is good but silly math claims that are impossible hurt the message.

Having a childhood is not the same as being left unsupervised in the streets. Parents can sit themselves outside on a folding chair in a safe, largely quiet and car-free area and let the kids play freely with the neighborhood kids. They can go to a park and do the same. They can bring kids over to the house or the backyard. "Free range" parents are irresponsible, and I and others with this sense are no "helicopters." We just understand that kids are still uncooked. I don't know of any evidence anyway to suggest that the more a kid roams around the streets unsupervised, the more successful and independent that kid becomes in life. There are also many families that don't even have the means because they live in extremely busy cities, sometimes crime-ridden ones, in apartments or small homes, maybe in low-income areas rather than wealthy suburban areas. A kid won't experience detriment just because he/she doesn't walk and play miles away from home without watchful adults nearby. There are many means for kids to play and discover the world.
